www.sciencemag.org SCIENCE VOL 326 9 OCTOBER 2009 193 COVER First described by David Hilbert in 1891, the Hilbert curve is a one-dimensional fractal trajectory that densely fills higher-dimensional space without crossing itself. A new method for reconstructing the three-dimensional architecture of the human genome, described on page 289, reveals a polymer analog of Hilbert’s curve at the megabase scale.

Fundamental monsoon dynamics: Aquaplanet monsoons and their response to climate changes
Monsoons are prominent features of the atmospheric tropical circulation, affecting the climate of nearly one quarter of the globe and sustaining more than one half of the human population in regions with rapidly growing economies. With projected increases in population and pressure for food security, understanding how monsoons will change with changing climate is both a priority and a major cha...
متن کاملGMMIP (v1.0) contribution to CMIP6: Global Monsoons Model Inter-comparison Project
The Global Monsoons Model Inter-comparison Project (GMMIP) has been endorsed by the panel of Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP) as one of the participating model inter-comparison projects (MIPs) in the sixth phase of CMIP (CMIP6). The focus of GMMIP is on monsoon climatology, variability, prediction and projection, which is relevant to four of the “Grand Challenges” proposed by the W...
متن کاملSeasonality in East Africa's coastal waters
A review of existing literature and data on seasonal patterns in East Africa's coastal waters indicates distinct seasonality in physical, chemical and biological oceanographic parameters. Seasonal patterns are dictated by the behavior of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) which creates 2 distinct seasons the northeast and southeast monsoons. SE monsoon (March to October) meteorological ...
متن کاملIndian monsoons shape dispersal phenology of plants.
The Indian monsoons are a major seasonal climatic event over the Indian subcontinent, heralding the arrival of the wet season. Many features of life, biological and cultural, are intimately synchronized to this seasonality. In this paper, we show that the Indian monsoons might have played an important role in shaping the fruiting time and hence dispersal phenology of plant species in the subcon...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau Monsoon Evolution and Its Linkages with Soil Moisture
The evolution of plateau monsoons is essential to synoptic climatology processes over the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. Based on ERA-Interim Reanalysis data covering 1979–2014 from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), we propose a new plateau monsoon index (ZPMI) that can effectively reflect the evolution of monsoons and compare this new index with the existing Plateau Mons...
